GTI Helps City Continue to Capture Biogas and Odors with Cover Replacement

Geomembrane Technologies Inc. (GTI) has been selected by the City of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, to replace the floating cover on its anaerobic lagoon.

The City of Brandon’s industrial wastewater treatment facility treats wastewater generated by a local pork processing plant. GTI fabricated and installed the original floating cover for the facility’s anaerobic basin in 1999. For more than 15 years, the cover has helped the city capture biogas and control odors, but it has reached the end of its expected service life.

The original GTI cover worked so well that the City of Brandon selected GTI for the replacement cover. The new gas collection cover consists of a gastight top sheet over a buoyant flexible foam insulation layer. Extra foam insulation is provided around the ports and hatches to support workers whenever they sample liquid contents and bottom sludge depths. The ports also provide a means for emergency ventilation of the cover system in the event of a power outage.

The new cover will be pre-fabricated in GTI’s fabrication shop and shipped to site. GTI’s team will remove the old cover in sections, salvaging reusable items, including: biogas collector pipes, aluminum batten, and access hatches. The GTI team will then commence installation of the new cover, which is expected to last for another 15 years or more.

The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017.
